The End of the Classmates Debacle
It’s a miracle!
Okay, maybe not a miracle, but definitely a good thing.
To review:
- Classmates ripped off my account for $40, and I emailed them.
- Classmates emailed me back and said too bad, you’re not getting your money back, and I replied.
- Classmates emailed me back and said that they would refund my money EXCEPT for $10, which they would keep and I could have the Gold Membership for another year. Here was my reply:
If we’re sticking with the relationship marketing model metaphor, Classmates as a girlfriend of mine who slept with my boyfriend gave him herpes, and then he passed it on to me – which is, admittedly, a sorry consolation prize. I don’t wish to continue the relationship with Classmates.
So, I repeat, and apparently will for some time, I WANT MY $39.99 REFUNDED INTO THE ACCOUNT IT WAS WITHDRAWN FROM AUGUST 30, 2010.
If you wish to speak to me in person, you can reach me at {phone number given here}.

Don’t get me wrong, I was kind of tired at this point of feeling so cranky…but every time I thought about the FORTY BUCKS (!) I just felt this slow burn in my gut that worked it’s way up to my brain – GGGGGRRRRRRR.
So I was prepared to start emailing twice a day, then four times, then once an hour and so on. But I didn’t have to, here was the reply I received:
Thank you for your reply. I apologize if this matter has caused you any frustration.
I understand your concerns about your Classmates Gold membership. I have reviewed your request and will make an exception to our policy and process a refund for the time remaining on your Gold membership term, in the amount of $37.83.
Your credit will be processed by Classmates immediately. Please note that the timing of your credit will depend on your financial institution.
You may continue to use your FREE membership benefits at Classmates.com. As a free member, you’re still listed on Classmates.com and will continue to receive email notifications about your account activity.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please reply directly to this email and let us know.

I suppose they can have the $2.16.
And, I’ll be watching my account…
